“We reiterate that payment of COVID-19 hazard and inducement allowance is sacrosanct and non-negotiable.

“It is unconscionable for politicians to fritter away the COVID-19 fund donated by philanthropists while COOUTH doctors who have been on the frontlines exposing themselves to increasing risk with inadequate PPEs continue to earn an insulting hazard allowance of N3,500.”

Says, “We have been pushed to the wall”

The apex socio-cultural organization of Igbo people, Ohanaeze ndigbo, yesterday, rose against the menace of herdsmen in the southeastern region of the country. This was prompted by the recent killing of a 65-year-old farmer, Uzoemena Iriaka by suspected herdsmen in his farm in Umuekpu, Agwa, Oguta Council Area of Imo State.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, therefore, charged Igbos to defend themselves as the killings in the region were becoming rampant. According to Ohanaeze, Ndigbo have been pushed to the wall by the rogue herdsmen who kill the people on an almost daily basis in their own home land.

“We have been pushed to the wall. We have no other option than to rise up now, gird our loins and face the seemingly intractable insecurity.”

In the same vein, the Coalition of South East Youth Leaders, COSEYL, has condemned the killing of the farmer, Uzoemena Iriaka, describing it as “gruesome and barbaric”. COSEYL stated that the people have had enough of the evil activities of the rogue herdsmen.

COSEYL insisted that South East governors must rise up to challenge the killer herdsmen now. They said, “This barbaric and gruesome killing must stop or the youths will call for revenge.” They also warned the herdsmen not to think that they have monopoly of killing and maiming, adding that “this barbaric and gruesome killing must stop.”

In a statement signed by Hon. Goodluck Egwu Ibem, the President General and Comrade Kanice Igwe, the Secretary General, COSEYL stated, “This is not the first time we are witnessing this kind of gruesome murder in Imo State and the South East zone in general, and at the end of the day, the Inspector General of Police will promise to fish out the perpetrators of the wicked act but nothing serious will be done about it.

“The herdsmen will go free, no arrest, no prosecution. They see themselves as super heroes who have license to kill at will in states that have governors as chief security officers.”

Furthermore, in a statement by Emeka Attama, the media aide to the President General, Chief Nnia Nwodo; and Prince Uche Achi-Ogbaga, the publicity secretary of the Igbo apex body, Ohanaeze Ndigbo condemned the killing, warning that Ndigbo will no longer watch while their people are killed like animals in their own farms. They therefore urged the people to rise up and protect themselves.

“The rampant killing and raping of defenseless people in their homes and farms has made it imperative for people to take all measures possible to defend themselves from these hoodlums.

“Communities should organise themselves and fight back these killers. It is unfortunate that the Federal Government stripped people of their means of self-defense without providing adequate protection for them or ensuring commensurate disarming in the North, especially among herdsmen.

“The Southeast states should expedite action on measures to give their subjects hope of protection from these marauders. People, villages and communities, especially Ndigbo, should rise up to defend themselves individually and collectively from such marauding criminals more especially as they are said to be non-Nigerians.

“We just cannot continue to allow foreigners, who do not place any premium on the sanctity of human lives to come into our homes to kill us like rats. Igbo people should stop the complaints forthwith. “Guard and defend yourselves from senseless massacres. Cordon off your (track) roads to farms, streams and other places to avoid being taken unawares.

Meanwhile, the lawmaker representing Oguta at the state House of Assembly, Frank Ugboma, has called for the arrest and prosecution of the herdsmen. He made this known yesterday in Owerri, days after the leadership of the Miyetti Allah pledged to pay compensation to the family of the deceased. According to the lawmaker, the people wanted more than just compensation for the victim’s family, but that his killers face the law.
He said, “The culprits should be apprehended and prosecuted. We are not just after compensation. We cannot continue to exchange our own for money. They should leave our farmlands. My people are predominantly farmers. We are calling for the arrest and prosecution of the killers.”

Endless borrowing will lead to endless sorrowing

Slash N4.6bn presidential maintenance budget!

Former Vice President and former Presidential aspirant, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has again berated President Muhammadu Buhari’s government for the constantly rising debt stock of Nigeria. This, he said makes the future look bleak for the country and its citizens.

In a statement released yesterday, which was entitled “Nigeria in Financial Crisis: Robbing our children to pay for our greed,” Atiku decried the nation’s debt-to-revenue ratio, adding that unless savings were prioritised, Nigeria would find it difficult to make genuine progress as a result.

VISIT ABOKIFX FOR LIVE RATES OF NAIRA TO DOLLAR
He said,  “Nothing has shocked me in my entire life in public service as the revelation from Nigeria’s first quarter 2020 financial reports in the Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy from the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, which shows, alarmingly, that whereas Nigeria spent a total sum of N 943.12 billion in debt servicing, the Federal Government’s retained revenue for the same period was only N950.56 billion.  This means that Nigeria’s debt to revenue ratio is now 99 per cent.
“No one should be deceived. This is a crisis! Debt servicing does not equate to debt repayment. The reality is that Nigeria is paying only the minimum payment to cover our interest charges. The principal remains untouched and is possibly growing.
“We are at a precipice. If our revenue figures do not go up, and go up quickly, Nigeria risks a situation where our revenue cannot even sustain our debt servicing obligations, meaning that we may become insolvent, and our creditors may foreclose on us, as has occurred in Sri Lanka and the Maldives.’’

Recalling his earlier intervention, entitled ‘Endless borrowing will lead Nigeria to endless sorrowing,’ Atiku said he had counseled the Federal Government to “desist from indiscriminate lending, and offered suggestions on ways to both increase revenue, and reduce expenditure.  However, my counsel fell on deaf ears. And now we have come to this.”

He added, “Again, on May 15, 2020, I counselled that the Federal Government ought to reduce Nigeria’s budget by at least 25 per cent to reflect the economic realities of the times that we live in. Again, my entreaties were brushed aside.
“As part of an administration that paid off Nigeria’s entire foreign debt, I am concerned by the alarming and avoidable unprecedented increase in our debt to Gross Domestic Product, GDP ratio and debt to revenue ratio. The alarm I sounded last year is now sounding louder.
“Not only have we squandered our opportunities, we have also squandered the opportunities of our future generations by bequeathing them debt that they neither incurred nor enjoyed.

“As a matter of utmost urgency and importance, I call on the Federal Government to take immediate steps to drastically reduce its expenditure, especially on wasteful projects, such as maintenance of the Presidential Air Fleet, and unnecessary renovations of buildings, limousine fleets for top government officials, overseas travels and treatments, and the N4.6 billion Presidential Villa maintenance budget, etc.
“We cannot be on the verge of economic ruin, while still maintaining a Presidential Air Fleet that has more planes than the Presidential fleets of those from whom we take these loans. In fact, Nigeria must sell those planes and channel the revenue to other vital areas of need, while taking additional steps to reduce the cost of running our government.”

“The federal government cannot continue to justify these unsustainable numbers by pointing at Nigeria’s debt to GDP ratio. That is only half the picture. Our debt to revenue ratio paints a much more realistic portrait of our financial situation, especially as our revenues are majorly tied to a mono product, oil and gas, which are very vulnerable to global shocks.

“Nigeria is facing a crisis, and we cannot continue to keep up appearances by taking out more loans to prop up our economy. That will amount not just to robbing Peter to pay Paul, but to robbing our children to pay for our own greed.”

Popular Nigerian musician, Oladapo Oyebanjo who is better known by his stage name D’Banj, has demanded 100 million naira from Miss Seyitan Babatayo who accused him of raping her in a hotel room on December 30, 2018.

In a pre-litigation letter signed by his lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), Dbanj asked his accuser to make a payment of N100m within 48 hours or face legal action.

In the letter, which was addressed to Miss Babatayo’s lawyer, Ojoge, Omileye and Partners, dated June 15, 2020, D’Banj also demanded that an apology be published in at least four national dailies.

The letter read in part, “We have been instructed to demand and we so hereby demand from you the following: That your client makes an outright apology and a total retraction of each and every false allegation made against and concerning our client.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has announced the suspension of the plan to reopen religious centers indefinitely. This, he explained, was inevitable due to the spike in COVID-19 cases in the state. He made this announcement on Tuesday at the Lagos House, Marina, while giving his 15th update on the pandemic.

According to Sanwo-Olu, Lagos state has gotten to the point where every resident must take responsibility for their safety. He added that the virus would only be defeated through “sensible personal decisions” taken by individuals on a daily basis.

The governor noted that as of Monday, June 15, 2020, the state had recorded 7,319 confirmed coronavirus cases, with 82 fatalities and 1,137 recoveries.

According to him, Lagos state accounts for 44% of the total number of confirmed cases nationwide. He also added that the increase in infection was due to community transmission. He stressed that the earlier announcement that mosques could reopen from June 19 and churches, June 21 has now been put on hold indefinitely.

“This is not a decision that we have taken lightly; it is simply in line with our ongoing evaluation of evolving scenarios regarding the course of the infection in Lagos State and the corresponding public health advisory guidelines issued by experts.

“So, let me say this again: we are now hereby suspending, with immediate effect, the plan to reopen religious houses and places of worship in Lagos State, until further notice.” Sanwo-Olu added that social centres, event centres and clubs would also remain shut.

He urged residents to use face masks anytime they were out of their houses, stressing that people must avoid non-essential travel, and wash and sanitise their hands regularly.

“As a government, we will continue to do everything in our power to safeguard the health and wellbeing of the people, but that can only be effective when the people themselves act responsibly and do not behave in a manner that undermines public health guidelines and puts the society at risk,” he said.

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, on Monday declared the ruling party was not for “big men”.

Oshiomhole made this declaration after a meeting of APC’s National Working Committee (NWC) with President Muhammadu Buhari’s Chief of Staff, Ibrahim Gambari.

He described APC as a party of rules and claimed the rules were not bent even for President Muhammadu Buhari, when he was seeking re-election in 2018. Therefore, the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, did not have a right of first refusal, as he seeks a second term. It will be recalled that Governor Obaseki has been disqualified by APC and will not participate in their June 22 primaries.

Oshiomhole, while answering questions from State House reporters in Abuja after the meeting with Gambari, said: “Our party is not a party of big men. It is governed by rules. Both the small and the big are subjected to those rules.

“I’m sure you will agree that our president led by example when we conducted direct primary in the last presidential election. We still went to Eagle Square for affirmation.

“So, if the president did not have the right of first refusal because our constitution does not provide for it, we cannot under any circumstances now bend the rules when it comes to some people and change the rules when it comes to others.”

Following the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum it gave the government, the National Association of Resident Doctors of Nigeria on Monday commenced a nationwide strike.

The NARD President, Dr Aliyu Sokomba, had in a communiqué on Monday directed all resident doctors to embark on the indefinite strike. The strike was as a result of the inadequacy of Personal Protective Equipment for all health care workers and the sacking of 26 resident doctors in the Jos University Teaching Hospital, among other issues.

The President of the Association of Resident Doctors, Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Dr Judith Jolayemi, said members of the association have displayed 100 percent compliance with the directive from the National President.

“The strike is going on, all our members have stopped working except those involved in COVID-19 treatment,” she said.

The resident doctors in Gombe State also joined in the industrial action. According to the state president of the association, Dr Nuhu James, only the members working in the various isolation centres were exempted from the strike.

The acting Chief Medical Director of the Federal Teaching Hospital Gombe, Dr Sule Bathnna, said the hospital was currently running skeletal service due to the doctors’ strike.

He said, “Resident doctors are key members of the hospital who are a good component for optimal running of services in the hospital. We have just had a meeting with heads of department to see where we can bridge the gap using those available to provide skeletal services.”

The resident doctors at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital also joined their counterparts in the industrial strike on Monday.

The President of the ARD, UITH chapter, Dr Lanre Olosunde, said, “Despite the obvious insensitivity of the government to the legitimate demands of doctors who have been sacrificing their lives at the forefront in the battle against COVID-19, we decided to exempt doctors that are currently attending to patients with COVID-19 at the various treatment centres across the nation.”

However, the resident doctors at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) said on Monday that due to the negative impact the strike might have on the management of COVID-19, they would not join the strike.

The President of the ARD, UPTH, Dr Ameh Ameh, said, “We have decided that for now, we will not be embarking on the nationwide strike because it would be counterproductive to Rivers residents. We realised that all health workers are playing an essential role in helping to stem the tide of COVID-19 and to reduce the impact in the country.”

Meanwhile, in its response to the nationwide strike, the Federal Government has said it is attending to the grievances of the National Association of Resident Doctors and hopes that the issues would be resolved soon.

The Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, stated this while answering questions from journalists during the press conference held by the Presidential Task Force on COVID – 19.

He said, “Today (Monday), we already had a meeting with the chairman, House of Representatives Committee (on Health) with NARD leadership in attendance. We were able to clarify many of the issues that they have been raising.

“I also did request that this is not the time to go on strike, not when we have a very difficult situation (COVID – 19) on our hands and requested for them to show enough empathy so we can make a headway working on these demands and should not down tools because the lives that may be lost in that process are not replaceable.”

Also, a statement by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, read in part, “The Speaker appealed to them to call off the strike…. He also called on them to consider the plight of average Nigerians as they consider shifting their position.”

"He lacks respect for elders," Arewa Youths

The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, AYCF, has lambasted Special Adviser, Media and Publicity to the President, Femi Adesina over his comment against the Northern Elders’ Forum. AYCF called on Adesina to stop throwing insults and unguarded words against NEF’s convener, Prof. Ango Abdullahi.

It will be recalled that following several attacks by bandits and insurgents in many Northern states, Professor Abdullahi had lamented that the North was at the mercy of criminals who are constantly spreading terror in the region. He then went on to accuse President Buhari of failing in his responsibility to protect the people of the North. Adesina subsequently described the NEF as mere irritant and featherweight. According to the presidential spokesman, NEF lacked good leaders.

However, AYCF criticised Adesina for attacking NEF’s leadership, and pointed out that Buhari’s spokesman has no respect for elders. In a statement signed by AYCF President-General, Yerima Shettima, the group demanded that Adesina apologise for his comments against Abdullahi. The group expressed surprise at Adesina for attacking Abdullahi and NEF for telling the government the truth regarding the killings in the North. The youths warned that it would not condone such attacks against its leaders from Adesina.

The statement read, “That Femi Adesina has insulted the North and we take exception to his choice of words, which we believe he would never use against elders from Yoruba land for whatever reason. We demand the withdrawal of the abusive language he deployed against Professor Ango Abdullahi and other respected elders in NEF.

“We cannot fathom why telling truth to power over the increasing killings in the North by Prof Ango warrants the use of derogatory language against our elders by Femi Adesina.

“We find it even scandalous that a Presidential Spokesman lacks the right choice of words to use in dodging the reality of today’s Nigeria, in which the North is worse off.

“We would like to make it abundantly clear that we will not condone the deployment of foul language against our elders any more. This is not the first time Mr. Adesina would be spewing foul language against elders of our region but we hope it will be the last.

“While we stress that we would not take this kind of infantile attack on our elders, we wish to call on all Northerners of good conscience to ignore Adesina’s unguarded outburst against Prof Ango and NEF. Enough of this nonsense please.”

"We must forge ahead to find a lasting solution"

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has expressed grief over the passing of the Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Sikiru Adebayo Osinowo. There are speculations that the lawmaker may have died of complications linked with COVID-19.

Osinowo passed away on Monday at 64 after a brief illness. Osinowo had been a four-time member of the Lagos State House of Assembly before he moved to the National Assembly.

He reportedly died at First Cardiology Hospital in Ikoyi, Lagos, where he had been admitted when he fell ill.

It was also gathered that gathered that a former governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi, is in a critical condition at the same hospital as a result of Coronavirus complications and doctors are battling to save his life.

It will be recalled that the late Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari, received treatment for Coronavirus at the same hospital until he died in April. The hospital is a top choice among wealthy Nigerians seeking cardiovascular treatment and has, of recent, handled a handful of Coronavirus patients among Nigeria's affluent.

Osinowo’s death reportedly spread panic across the All Progressives Congress, Lagos chapter where he was a strong voice and had been reportedly close to the party's National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

Sanwo-Olu, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Gboyega Akosile, described the lawmaker’s death as painful and vowed not to relent in the fight against COVID-19.

In his words, “The death of Senator Bayo Osinowo is painful. He died at a time when we have just begun to consolidate on our successes and see a ray of hope in our fight against the COVID-19.

“We must not allow the death of Senator Osinowo to deter us from forging ahead in our quest to find a lasting solution to the dreaded disease.”

Sanwo-Olu also hailed the late lawmaker as a fine gentleman, loyal party man and committed democrat.

Akwa Ibom State faced some tension on Saturday as Christ Embassy, Uyo, rejected the guidelines issued by the state government for reopening worship centres, describing them as impracticable and unacceptable.

The state government issued the guidelines as a means of containing the coronavirus pandemic in the state. This was done after due consultation with the state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, led by Rev. Dr Nduese Ekwere.

However in a media briefing held at the church headquarters in Uyo, the pastor of the International Worship Centre, Emmanuel Effiong, stated that CAN’s agreement with the government on the guidelines would not be binding on members of the church. This, according to him, is because Christ Embassy is not a member of CAN.

Effiong said that the use of face masks throughout the congregational worship as stipulated in the guidelines exposes worshippers to health hazards, while the seating arrangement of not more than 200 no matter the size of church is a clear attempt to gag the church. He further made reference to the Nigerian Constitution to buttress his points, stressing that the guidelines issued by the state government were against the fundamental right to worship and made it difficult to exercise one’s faith as a Christian.

He said, “Our church is a global ministry and we do not believe or advocate unionism, rather we believe in the unity of faith. Today, we state without equivocation that we are not members of CAN or any other association in the country and as such hold the strong belief that we cannot and should not be bounded by whatever decision the association reaches with the government.

“While we do not question the right of anybody or churches forming association nor are we against CAN or any association setting up guidelines for their members, it is unacceptable to believe that such guidelines will be binding on non-members of their groups.

“The use of face masks for the entire duration of congregational worship is an act, which has been scientifically proven to be hazardous to the health as uninterrupted use of face masks over a long period of time may cause hypoxia-the absence of oxygen to sustain bodily functions.

“Also, we are expected not to sit more than 200 worshippers during each church service, among others. This is a clear attempt to gag the church.”

Ibidunni was known for providing grants for couples who needed fertility treatments.

Ibidunni Ighodalo, popular ex-beauty queen, Lagos businesswoman, and wife of Lagos-based pastor and founder of Trinity House, Pastor Ituah Ighodalo, is dead.

It was gathered that the event planner, who would have been 40 by July 19, died in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, in the early hours of Sunday. The couple’s families released a statement confirming the sad news.

“The Ighodalo and Olaleye Ajayi families are deeply saddened to announce the sudden loss of our beloved wife and daughter, Mrs Ibidunni Ituah-Ighodalo, who passed away in the early hours of today (Sunday).

“As you will understand, this is a difficult time for our families and we will appreciate some privacy during this time,” the statement said.

Ibidunni, an ex-beauty queen, got married to Pastor Ituah Ighdalo on February 16, 2007. Pastor Ituah, who officiated at a funeral on Sunday, gave hints on the death in his sermon.

“A lot of you know that I really shouldn’t be here. But that is how life is. Around 2’oclock this morning, I received a call that shattered my life, but life must go on,” he said.

Ibidunni founded and successfully ran an events company, Elizerbeth R, as well as a non-profit organisation, Ibidunni Ighodalo Foundation, through which she provided grants for couples who needed fertility treatments, including IVF.

It was learnt that during the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown, Ibidunni had led her group round the country to distribute palliatives to underprivileged people. She was also reported to have set up the Enugu Isolation Centre and seen it to completion despite a sprained ankle. She is survived by her husband and their two children.

Meanwhile, condolences have poured in from friends, loved ones and well wishers all over the world. President Muhammadu Buhari also commiserated with Pastor Ituah Ighodalo on Sunday via a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina.

“Please accept my condolences. May God give you the fortitude to bear the loss, and strengthen you at this trying time,” the statement read. Buhari described Pastor Ighodalo as a man who “faithfully prays for the country and the government.”

in the same vein, the governor of Edo State Governor, Gowin Obaseki, and his wife, Betsy, said in a statement, “Ibidunni was one of the finest among us; she was full of life and gave herself to causes that edified life and living.”
