Google on Tuesday extended the option for its employees to work from home into next year due to the pandemic.

Returning to Google campuses will remain voluntary globally through January 10, with local offices given the discretion to decide when to require employees to return to their desks, according chief executive Sundar Pichai.

“I’m happy to say that a large number of offices globally are already open for business, and we are welcoming back tens of thousands of Googlers on a voluntary basis,” Pichai said.

“The road ahead may be a little longer and bumpier than we hoped, yet I remain optimistic that we will get through it together.”

He promised Google workers 30 days’ notice before they would have to return to their offices, and announced they would be able to take off an extra day in October and December as “reset days” to “rest and recharge.”

Google, Facebook and other tech giants have delayed plans for workers to return to the campuses that were abandoned early in the pandemic in an effort to limit the spread of Covid-19.

Tech firms have also instituted vaccine and mask requirements to make offices safer as the Delta variant surges in the US and other countries.

The Executive Secretary of the Kaduna State Scholarship and Loans Board, Rilwan Hassan, who disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, said the evacuation was concluded last weekend in line with the state government’s directive.

According to Mr Hassan, the move is to ensure that all students of Kaduna State are not trapped or cut in a crossfire, even as the situation tends to be further degenerating.

He explained that 87 students were evacuated on Friday last week by security agencies under the supervision of the board and have since been reunited with their families.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Leo Iraboh, announced this yesterday at a one-day interactive session with retired senior military officers from the Northeast at the 23 Armored Brigade in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.

Iraboh said the core objective of the parley was to engage the retired senior colleagues to cross-fertilise ideas on how to overcome the current insecurity situation in the region and other parts of the country.

“It is part of the reason I am here with my team: to interact with our retired senior colleagues, to look for holistic solutions about how to bring to an end the insecurity challenges in the region.

“We believe that as we interact and engage them, they will be ready to open up to us in areas that will enhance security, also be able to tell us areas of our mistakes and for us to make corrections,” Iraboh said.

According to the CDS, among the cardinal objectives of the parley is the need to come up with solutions, as security is everybody’s business.

Iraboh noted that the one-day meeting was an opportunity, by extension, to reach out to the people of the Northeast, to show appreciation to them for supporting the Nigeria military and ask them to give more.

The CDS said he believed that solutions to the lingering security challenges in the region lie with the people.

“We believe that, principally, the solution to the Northeast problem will be largely dependent on the inputs of those who come from the region.

“Also, we believe that in the coming days, security will improve and be better in the region and Nigeria,” he said.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has hinted that troops are on the trail of the bandits that invaded the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna State.

Bandits, who have been abducting students in public schools in the State, attacked the Academy in the wee hours of Tuesday, killing two officers and abducting one.

The DHQ, in a statement by the Director Defence Information, Major General Benjamin Sawyer, assured troops are combing the entire location in search and rescue mission.

“Unfortunately, two brave and gallant officers paid the supreme price while 1 other officer was abducted by the bandits during the process.

“All efforts have been intensified by troops who are currently combing the entire locations in search and rescue mission for the abducted officers.

The Taliban said that their fighters had surrounded resistance forces holed up in Afghanistan’s Panjshir Valley but were looking to negotiate rather than take the fight to them.

The announcement follows scattered reports of clashes overnight, with pro-Taliban social media accounts claiming gunmen were massing, and Afghanistan’s former vice president saying resistance forces were holding strong.

Taliban fighters “are stationed near Panjshir”, spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid tweeted, saying they had the area surrounded on three sides.

“The Islamic Emirate is trying to resolve this issue peacefully,” he added.

Pro-resistance accounts on social media had dismissed earlier claims of being pushed back, saying Taliban fighters had been ambushed and routed.

Claims from either side were impossible to independently verify from a remote mountainous region that is largely inaccessible.

Panjshir — famous for its natural defences never penetrated by Soviet forces or the Taliban in earlier conflicts — remains the last major holdout of anti-Taliban forces led by Ahmad Massoud, son of the famed Mujahideen leader Ahmed Shah Massoud.

Former Afghan vice president Amrullah Saleh is also there, and photos posted on social media in recent days have shown him in talks with Massoud.

The valley is guarded by a narrow gorge, making entry — or escape — extraordinarily difficult for outsiders, who can be picked off by entrenched forces positioned on higher ground.

A spokesman for Massoud’s anti-Taliban National Resistance Front told AFP at the weekend that the group was prepared for “long-term conflict”, but would prefer to negotiate for an inclusive government.

“The conditions for a peace deal with the Taliban are decentralisation, a system that ensures social justice, equality, rights, and freedom for all,” spokesman Ali Maisam Nazary told AFP.

Following the collapse of the US-backed government last week, the Taliban are consolidating their control over the country and holding a series of meetings with old foes — including opposition politicians and warlords.
