Manufacturers got an assurance yesterday on improved access to foreign exchange (forex) on raw materials that are not available locally.

They got the assurance from President Muhammadu Buhari during an advocacy visit by the leadership of Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) to the State House in Abuja.

According to the President, the relevant ministry had been directed to revisit their concerns about the increase in excise duties on the identified products and other tariff-related matters.

He was reacting to requests by MAN President Mansur Ahmed, who led delegation, on the need to create an enabling environment for the manufacturing sector to contribute more to the economy.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the President also assured MAN that Nigeria will take steps to fully maximize the benefits of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement.

The statement said the government will fast-track the establishment of the authority to superintend the administration of Rules of Origin and Commission as well as the automation for issuance of Electronic Certificate of Origin for AfCFTA.

It added that the Federal Government would also ensure that relevant structured platforms are established for monitoring and evaluation of the performance of the Ease of Doing Business and improved government patronage of made in Nigeria products.

Buhari was quoted as saying: “Our strategic plan to boost manufacturing activities in the country is on course. We will continue to improve the patronage of locally made goods, bridge the gap between skills required by industry and those provided by our tertiary institutions and ensure seamless access to long term finance for our Small and Medium-Scale Enterprises (SMEs).

“We recognise that MAN remains a key stakeholder in this journey and we will continue our engagement with you.”

Affirming the belief that a private sector-led economy is the way to create jobs in the country, President Buhari urged the MAN leadership to impress it on manufacturers that the government recognises their resilience in promoting a virile economy.

“I beseech you to continue to support the government in our quest to provide the appropriate environment that will attract the necessary investment both domestic and foreign, for the upliftment of the nation’s economy,” he said.

Brighton’s Danny Welbeck scored a dramatic stoppage-time goal to deny Chelsea a vital Premier League win on Wednesday just as they were poised to move to within three points of Manchester City.

Romelu Lukaku outmuscled Neil Maupay to head home a corner midway through the first half but former Manchester United and Arsenal forward Welbeck punished the home side with a headed goal at the death.

The 1-1 draw means Thomas Tuchel’s side are five points behind City, who will extend their lead to eight points if they beat Brentford in Wednesday’s later kick-off.

Pep Guardiola’s men were leading 1-0 at half-time.

Lukaku started his second spell at Chelsea in style after returning from Inter Milan in August but then struggled with his form and fitness before suffering a bout of coronavirus.

But he came off the bench to score in his side’s 3-1 victory at Aston Villa on Sunday and was rewarded with a spot in the starting line-up at Stamford Bridge on a mild December night.

The 28-year-old was impressive as the powerful focal point of Chelsea’s attack, holding the ball up well and menacing the Brighton defense with his physical presence.

The home side looked more dangerous in the early stages without creating many clear-cut openings and former Chelsea player Tariq Lamptey was a constant threat down the right for the visitors.

Chelsea wing-back Reece James limped off in the 27th minute with an apparent hamstring injury, to be replaced by Marcos Alonso.

They went ahead immediately when Lukaku shook off the attentions of Maupay after a tussle to power a header past goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

Brighton’s complaints were waved away as Chelsea — for so long top of the league this season — celebrated.

But Graham Potter’s side came back strongly, with Edouard Mendy forced to push away a fierce Adam Lallana drive while Alexis Mac Allister shot straight at the goalkeeper.

The impressive Yves Bissouma stung the hands of Mendy early in the second half as the visitors continued to trouble Chelsea.

Minutes later Callum Hudson-Odoi burst forward from his own half but failed to find Mason Mount before Maupay flashed wide at the other end as the game opened up.

It looked as though it was going to be a familiar story for Brighton, who have struggled to score this season, but substitute Welbeck had other ideas, heading home Marc Cucurella’s cross in the 91st minute.

Niger State Governor, Abubakar Bello, has mourned the victims of a boat mishap at Zhigiri village in Shiroro Local Government of the state.

No fewer than seven persons lost their lives on Sunday when the villagers were heading to Dnaweto – a neighboring village in the hinterland for a naming ceremony.

Three days after the incident, the governor said he was saddened by the accident, describing it as painful and unfortunate.

He commiserated with the families of the victims and prayed to God to forgive their shortcomings and grant them eternal rest.

“I am really sad with the unfortunate boat mishap,” the Governor said. “Measures need to be put in place to really avoid reoccurrence.

“It is good to have the dam, it is also important to protect the people living around the dam. My prayers are with the family members of the victims. I urge them to accept the incident as an act of Allah.”

The governor observed that the construction of the Zungeru Dam has forced the residents of the affected communities to adopt water transportation.

He, therefore, called on the Hydro Power Producing Area Development Commission (HYPPADEC) to as a matter of urgency, provide safety kits such as life jackets, and sensitise members of affected communities on water transportation.

While acknowledging that the Zungeru Dam was to boost power generation in the country, the governor said the people living in communities around the dam must be protected.

The governor equally gave an assurance that the state government would not leave any stone unturned in ensuring that all necessary measures were put in place to prevent a reoccurrence of the incident.

The Senior Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, has recovered from COVID-19.

Shehu announced his recovery in a Facebook post on Wednesday, barely a week after he confirmed his initial positive status.

“I thank Almighty Allah for my speedy recovery from COVID-19,” he said in the social media post. “My prayers and deepest respect are for all of you, who prayed, called or texted expressing your concerns for me.

“May all of our countrymen and women still afflicted with the virus fight this scourge with all their might and get well soon.”

Reports had emerged that some of President Muhammadu Buhari’s aides have gone into isolation after they tested positive for COVID-19.

While the number of those infected could not be ascertained, Shehu said that he had contracted the disease.

Despite being fully vaccinated, he disclosed that he had mild symptoms of the disease – a trait connected with the omicron variant.

On the other hand, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, stated that he was neither in isolation nor receiving treatment for the disease, contrary to reports suggesting he was positive for the virus.

Reacting to the COVID concerns within the Presidential Villa, another presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, said there was nothing abnormal about the President’s aides testing positive for COVID-19.

Adesina, who is the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, stressed that they were just humans like every other person.

“They can fall sick, they can contract the virus, and the virus can also disappear,” he had stated in an earlier interview. “The fact that we are presidential aides does not make us immune to certain things. If there is a virus that is ravaging society, well, it can touch anybody.”

Bauchi and Ebonyi States have recorded new deaths from Lassa fever as the nation’s toll from the disease since the beginning of 2021 rises to 92.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) disclosed this in its latest situation report on the outbreak of the disease in the country.

Data from the report for Week 50, which covered December 13 to 19, revealed that three more deaths were reported in the week under review.

While Bauch reported two new fatalities, Ebonyi recorded a new death from the disease.

“Cumulatively from Week 1 to Week 50, 2021, 92 deaths have been reported with a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 20.3 per cent, which is lower than the CFR for the same period in 2020 (20.7 per cent),” part of the report read.

Lassa fever is an acute viral illness and a viral hemorrhagic fever first reported in the Lassa community in Borno State when two missionary nurses died from an unusual febrile illness.

Since then, Nigeria has continued to report cases and outbreaks and the disease is increasingly recognised to be endemic in many parts of West Africa such as Benin Republic, Ghana, Mali and the Mano River region (Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea).

According to the NCDC, a total of 190 new cases were suspected in 11 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), but just 10 cases were confirmed in four states.

They include Edo – two, Ondo – four, Bauchi – three, and Ebonyi – one, and two of them are healthcare workers.

The number of new confirmed cases, the agency stated, is the same as the figure reported in the previous week.

“In total for 2021, 17 states have recorded at least one confirmed case across 66 Local Government Areas,” it said. “Of all confirmed cases, 83 per cent are from Edo (43 per cent), Ondo (35 per cent), and Taraba (five per cent) States.

“The predominant age group affected is 21 – 30 years (range: <1 to 70 years, Median Age: 29 years). The male to female ratio for confirmed cases is 1:0.9. The number of suspected cases has decreased compared to that reported for the same period in 2020.”

Lassa virus is transmitted to man by infected multi-mammate rats and humans become infected from direct contact with the urine and faeces of the rat carrying the virus.

People also contract the disease by touching soiled objects, eating contaminated food, or exposure to open cuts or sores.

Secondary transmission from person to person can also occur as a result of exposure to the virus in the blood, tissue, urine, faeces or other bodily secretions of an infected patient.

New Deaths In Bauchi, Ebonyi As Lassa Fever Toll Rises To 92

On Tuesday, hundreds of thousands more people were confined to their homes in northern China as the country battled its worst Covid surge in 21 months and locked-down residents took to social media to complain about food shortages.

China — where the virus emerged two years ago — has followed a “zero-Covid” strategy of tight border restrictions, lengthy quarantines and targeted lockdowns as Beijing prepares to welcome thousands of overseas visitors to February’s Winter Olympics.

But authorities have faced a resurgent virus in recent weeks, reporting 209 infections on Tuesday — the highest single-day tally since March last year, when the pandemic raged through the central city of Wuhan.

The surge — while low in comparison to rampant cases in Europe and the United States — has prompted authorities to impose what they have called the “strictest” possible curbs in the northern city of Xi’an, whose 13 million residents are entering a sixth day of home confinement.

As well as having undergone several rounds of testing, households are limited to sending out one person every three days to buy groceries.

Nearby cities have also logged cases linked to the flare-up, with Yan’an — about 300 kilometres (186 miles) from Xi’an — Tuesday shuttering businesses and ordering hundreds of thousands of people in one district to stay indoors.

The Xi’an lockdown is the most sweeping in China since the similarly-sized Wuhan was sealed off.

More than 800 coronavirus cases have been recorded in Xi’an since December 9, with the youngest case a 38-day-old infant, the state-run Global Times newspaper reported Tuesday.

Many residents Tuesday posted on social media platforms to call for help in acquiring food and other essentials.

“I’m about to be starved to death,” wrote one person on the Weibo site.

“There’s no food, my housing compound won’t let me out, and I’m about to run out of instant noodles… please help!”

“I don’t want to hear any more news about how everything is fine,” wrote another. “So what if supplies are so abundant — they’re useless if you don’t actually give them to people.”

Authorities have insisted that supplies remain stable as they maintain strict controls on movement into and out of Xi’an.

One Xi’an resident surnamed Liu told AFP on Tuesday that chaotic management of some communities was behind the shortages.

“The supply at the store in our compound is currently all right — but the prices are higher than in normal times,” he said.

A resident surnamed Wei said staff at her compound collected residents’ online orders at the entrance and delivered them to her door in person.

“I haven’t experienced a lack of supplies,” she said. “The community notified us of the lockdown before it happened, so I managed to stock up.”

Xi’an has set up over 4,400 sampling sites and deployed more than 100,000 people to handle the latest round of testing, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

Footage showed masked residents queueing to be tested in streets and sports centres, while health workers in blue hazmat suits were shown on state TV using hoses to spray deserted streets haphazardly with disinfectant.

Students have also been banned from leaving university dormitories unless necessary, CCTV reported.

In Xianyang — a nearby city of four million with around a dozen cases — the local Red Cross branch appealed to the public for cash donations, saying its “consumption and demand for protective gear is currently very large”.

A few hours to the commencement of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Congress in Zamfara State, some political thugs have attacked the venue of the exercise.

The program initially slated for the Zaitun Oil mill, behind State Pilgrim Board has been moved to the Command Guest House in Gusau, the state capital.

Channels Television gathered that the thugs invaded the venue in the early hours of Monday and destroyed the voting materials, nomination forms, two vehicles belonging to party members, chairs and set canopies ablaze.

The Personal Secretary to Deputy Governor of Zamfara State, Umar Aminu said the party will not be intimidated by the incident, noting that the congress will still go ahead as scheduled.

He said the hoodlums are unknown but assured security agencies will investigate.

It is not certain which political party is responsible for the attack on the PDP facility in the north-western state.

Despite the attack, the Deputy Governor of Zamfara State, Barrister Mahdi Aliyu Gusau and the Caretaker Chairman of the party, Ambassador Bala Mande have arrived the new venue of the congress.

The congress has drawn 1,089 delegates and is meant to produce key PDP officials that will pilot the affairs of the party.

Political Thugs Attack Venue Of Zamfara PDP Congress

A group of elder statesmen in Zamfara State has raised alarm over the alleged indiscriminate release of arrested bandits and their collaborators by the authorities in the state.

They urged the law enforcement agencies to stop the act, citing it as one of the factors responsible for the escalation of the insecurity in the state.

The group raised the alarm on Sunday at a meeting in Gusau, the state capital where it recommended the revitalization of Community-Based Associations to generate funds for the establishment of primary and secondary schools, to offer free education to orphans who lost their parents as a result of banditry, in a bid to prevent a reoccurrence of such incidents.

A former member of the National Assembly who represented Zamfara Central constituency, Senator Saidu Dansadau, briefed journalists on behalf of the group at the end of the meeting.

“The committee expresses its dismay and disappointment for indiscriminate release of criminals by the authorities who either arrest them or to whom the criminals are handed over when they are arrested by the military, vigilante group, or any other security organisation,” he said.

“We appeal to the law enforcement agencies in the state to, for the sake of God, have a paradigm shift from this indiscriminate release of criminals and resort to arraigning the criminals in the court of law because the meeting identified this indiscriminate and incessant release of criminals as one of the immediate causes of the escalation of criminality in the state.”

Senator Dansadau acknowledged that the security situation in the state has improved significantly following the shutdown of telecom services.

He, however, stated that places like Birnin Magaji, Shinkafi, and Zurmi Local Government Areas still face incessant attacks by bandits.

Members of the group comprise traditional rulers, religious leaders, senior citizens, and some political officeholders who came together to discuss how to mobilize Muslims and Christians to pray for the return of peace, and to support the government to succeed in the fight against banditry in Zamfara.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has suspended travelers from Nigeria, Tanzania, Kenya and Ethiopia from entering the country.

Its National Emergency Crisis and Disasters Emergency Management Authority (NCEMA) and the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) announced the decision on Friday.

This ban is expected to take effect from Saturday.

The development has created chaos for both inbound and outbound passengers, including Nigerians wishing to come home for the Yuletide.

Some have arranged last-minute flight changes to other European, African and US carriers.

The new travel rule implies that Nigerians can not use the other available Abu Dhabi-based airline, Etihad, which had seen an unprecedented rise in passenger traffic as an alternative to Emirates.

Emirates stopped flight services to Nigeria because of the recently resolved spat between Nigeria-UAE.

While both Emirates and Air Peace have not resumed flights, the UAE authorities issued a new travel restriction which it blamed on the rising cases of the Omicron COVID-19 variant.

The statement by the GCAA and NCEMA confirmed the “suspension of entry of travelers from Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Nigeria on all flights of national and foreign carriers, as well as transit passengers coming from them, as of Saturday, December 25 at 7:30 pm”.

The suspension includes those who were present for 14 days before coming to the UAE.

Also on Friday, the Airport Manager of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, Mrs. Victoria shin-Aba, slammed passengers who come to the airport with positive PCR test results.

She said: “People with positive COVID test still come to the Airport to board planes. I don’t know for whatever reason.

“They know with this they can’t travel but they still bring it but definitely they are not allowed to travel.”

A Moscow court slapped Google with an unprecedented hefty fine of nearly $100 million on Friday as Russia ramps up its pressure on foreign tech giants.

Moscow has piled fines on the world’s biggest internet platforms, accusing them of not moderating their content properly and interfering in the country’s affairs.

But so far fines on Facebook parent company Meta, Twitter, Google have stretched into the tens of millions of rubles, not billions.

However on Friday a Moscow court fine Google a record 7.2 billion rubles, ($98 million, 86 million euros), the court’s press service said on Telegram, for repeatedly failing to delete illegal content.

The content was not specified, but Russia regularly takes legal action for not removing content it labels illegal, such as pornographic material or posts condoning drugs and suicide.

“We’ll study the court documents and then decide on next steps,” Google’s press service told AFP.

Interfax news agency said that the massive fine was calculated as a percentage of Google’s annual earnings and was the maximum penalty for a repeated violation.

Meta — which has a hearing in court later today on the same charges — has also been threatened with a revenue-based fine.

On Thursday, Twitter was handed its latest fine of three million rubles ($40,000) after authorities started throttling its services in the spring.

In the past few years, the Russian government has used the pretext of protecting minors and fighting extremism to control the Russian segment of the web and began developing a so-called sovereign internet.

Ahead of parliamentary elections in September, Russia’s media watchdog blocked dozes of websites linked to jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, whose organisations have been banned in Russia as “extremist”.

The regulator also ordered Google and Apple to remove an app dedicated to Navalny’s “Smart Voting” campaign which advised supporters who to vote for to unseat Kremlin-aligned politicians.

The Silicon Valley giants complied, with sources telling AFP the decisions came after authorities threatened to arrest local staff.

Russia’s media regulator has also blocked dozens of websites linked to Navalny.

Earlier, during protests in January in support of Navalny, authorities accused platforms including Google’s YouTube and Twitter of meddling in Russia’s domestic affairs by not deleting posts calling for people to join the rallies.

President Vladimir Putin that same month complained that large technology companies were competing with states.

Russia has already blocked a number of websites that have refused to cooperate with authorities, such as the video platform Dailymotion and LinkedIn.

As part of broad efforts to bend foreign tech under its control, Russia in September banned six major VPN providers including Nord VPN and Express VPN.

Russia also introduced a new law demanding that smartphones, computers and other gadgets sold in the country come with pre-installed domestic software and apps.

Russia’s opposition accuses the Kremlin of using such regulations to further stifle freedom of speech and clamp down on online dissent.

President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Amaju Pinnick said he consulted Portuguese gaffer Jose Mourinho and French manager Arsene Wenger in the search for a new Super Eagles coach.

The NFF boss said this in a media parley on Wednesday in Lagos State, noting that the football body will bring a coach that is “hungry” and “ready for the challenge” of tutoring the three-time African champions.

“I also spoke with Arsene. Arsene is our technical director at FIFA. I had an interface with him about some of these coaches. And of course [we spoke to ]Mourinho. I am not going to tell you that we did not speak to Mourinho,” Pinnick explained, less than two weeks after Gernot Rohr was dismissed as the team’s coach.

“These are some of the best coaches in the world. And there is nothing wrong with it because he [Wenger] is equally concerned just the way we are.”

Pinnick, who also noted that the NFF has held talks with a former Real Madrid assistant coach and FC Porto head coach Jose Peseiro; Serbian Mladen Krstajic, said the body will stick to its recruitment process in hiring a new manager for the Super Eagles.

“The emphasis on the new coach is discipline. We will look at his antecedents on discipline,” he added.

“Secondly, we will also look at how hungry he is to win trophies because if they are hungry it supersedes so many things and if he wants to win, he will instill discipline. We will look at all these things but I cannot make a pronouncement emphatically because I will be undermining my executive committee.

“So, until my executive committee comes out within the next week or so to say this is the name because the technical committee has to bring their presentation to the executive committee. It is going to be a seamless movement to the current team headed by Eguavoen.”

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on Thursday urged Nigerians to observe COVID-19 health protocols during the holiday season.

Rev. Dr. Samson ‘Supo Ayokunle, in a statement, said Nigerians should not let down their guards especially as the country has entered the fourth phase of the pandemic.

He also urged political leaders to work on bringing “relief and joy” to citizens with the “prompt payment of workers salaries and pensions to the pensioners.”

On insecurity, the CAN leader asked Nigerians to be hopeful and trust in the power of God.

CAN Press Statement
Christmas: A Season of Hope, Peace and Joy

I rejoice with all Christians in Nigeria and of course all over the world at this season of Christmas, the season when God became man to live among us in order to redeem us from all our sins and eternal death. My prayer is that nothing would steal from your joy of this season in the name of Jesus Christ. (John 1: 14)

Let us remember that the devil is a deceiver and what we are passing through presently in Nigeria might not be what would cause us to rejoice! Of course, what we are currently passing through may not give anybody hope of tomorrow humanly speaking unless those in power are more decisive and God intervenes for us. We are experiencing insecurity everywhere, most especially, the kidnapping, wanton killings and destructions of facilities here and there by the criminals in our midst, the insurgency in the northeast, the northwest and the north central of Nigeria, just to mention a few are terrible things of great concern. They do not give us joy at all humanly speaking. However, we need to remember that part of the purposes of the birth of Jesus Christ is to give hope to the hopeless and deliver us from sin and those who hate us. He came to set the captives free.
The Bible says in 1Peter 1: 3-4 thus:
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you,”

‭‭Peter’s letter really was to a people who were hopeless, otherwise, he wouldn’t have attached hope in Christ to his message.
My message to all Nigerians is to remain hopeful in Christ Jesus and rejoice in hope no matter what the situation we are passing through may be. Our Father God can turn all situations around in Christ Jesus because as God, he can do all things. He is our Waymaker and he would make way for us in the name of Jesus.
I urge you to receive Jesus as the Lord over your life today, share the message of the saving power of Jesus with others who do not know him and show love in a practical way to someone around you. Let us through the love of Christ embrace one another irrespective of religious, ethnic and political differences. Let us be reconciled to God and to one another. Let all the killings, the kidnapping of our fellow brothers and sisters and all other acts of wickedness stop because God is going to judge these acts on the day of judgement.

At this season of Christmas, I plead with those at the corridor of power to use it to bring relief and joy to the citizens of this country. It is the good you have done now that people would remember tomorrow. Please, let us lessen the pains of Nigerians by paying more attention to their well-being in the prompt payment of workers salaries and pensions to the pensioners. Let all things be done to reduce the high cost of things in the market and let enabling environment be created for employment of our youths who are roaming the streets having no job.

I plead with all Nigerians not to let off their guards on Covid-19 protocols. The world has entered the fourth phase of the pandemic and it is spreading faster than other phases. Please, wherever you go, especially in public places such as markets and churches, wear your masks and keep all the safety protocols.
I pray that none of us would die untimely in the mighty name of Jesus.

Once again, I wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a happy and very prosperous New Year 2022 in Jesus’ name.

Rev. Dr. Samson ‘Supo Ayokunle
President, Christian Association of Nigeria &
Co-Chairman, Nigeria Inter Religious Council (NIREC)
